The MCSA Sloop Championship trophy is a silver-plated wine cooler on a wooden base. It was donated by Edwin Theisen, Jr of the Detroit Yacht Club in memory of his wife who passed away unexpectedly due to cancer. The first year the event was held at the Hoover Yacht Club in Columbus. Since that time it has been held at the Detroit Yacht Club. In 1981 the event was finished at Wisconsin due to lack of wind on the Detroit River. Diane Burton a student at the University of Michigan was instrumental in starting the event at the Detroit Yacht Club.
