Spring Sailing is live in the MCSA! The University of Michigan travels to Charleston…

The Michigan Wolverines traveled to two regattas in the past few weeks both in Charleston, South Carolina! Read on for more on each!

The Michigan Wolverines traveled to Charleston, South Carolina eager to participate once again in the Southern Collegiate Offshore Regatta. Winds were light over the duration of the weekend, making sailing the larger XP 44 difficult. On Saturday, the race committee was able to get off one race before the wind died. Following a postponement to wait for wind, one more race was started, only for the wind to die again. On Sunday, the morning proved to be lighter than forecasted resulting in a delayed start. The race committee was able to complete two more races before the wind died for the day. The team had a great time learning more about the XP 44, Charleston Harbor sailing conditions, and various strategies of keelboat racing. The team also enjoyed the opportunity to explore Charleston thanks to a University of Charleston freshman sailor. Overall, it was a great weekend of racing, team bonding, and escaping the cold Michigan weather!

Special thanks to the SCOR committee, Carolina Yacht Club, Charleston Offshore, and especially David Poston for graciously lending his boat and Glen Appelbaum for sailing with us!

The team traveled down to Charleston, SC once again, this time for our first dinghy regatta of the season. With the promise of heavy winds, we looked forward to Saturday, however, racing was called for the day as there was too much wind! We started early Sunday morning in order to get in lots of races, and both fleets raced at the same time, A fleet in 420s and B fleet in FJs. Wind conditions were fantastic, and six races were quickly completed for both fleets. As the wind shifted and lightened up in the early afternoon, the seventh race was delayed. We were eventually able to complete two more races before they called it a day. Overall, the team had a great weekend of getting back into racing, competing against some amazing sailors, and navigating lots of current in the smaller boats. Michigan placed well with a 7th place finish in A fleet, a 5th place finish in B fleet, and a 5th place finish overall. Go blue!
