After two electrifying days of racing on the Charles River, where sailors faced a variety of challenging wind conditions, Roger Williams University clinched victory in the Western division while Harvard University took first in the Eastern division at the 2024 Open National Semi-Finals. The event was co-hosted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University, setting the stage for intense and competitive sailing.
The Open Semi-Finals mirrored the Women’s Semi-Finals with similarly unpredictable wind conditions. On the first day, sailors were treated to a building breeze, perfect for showcasing their hiking prowess and heavy air boat-handling. However, the second day brought a wind delay, keeping sailors ashore until the sea breeze finally filled in. Despite this, the MIT Race Committee managed to complete eighteen races in the Eastern Division, while the Harvard Race Committee conducted seventeen races in the Western Division.

Roger Williams University’s victory was met with excitement and pride. Co-Captain, Claire Buckley shared her enthusiasm, saying, “The conditions on the Charles were spectacular—yesterday’s big breeze and today’s sea breeze made for thrilling races. We started strong and soared from there.” Riley Read, Assistant Coach for Roger Williams, added, “Our relief sailors stepped up and performed admirably, allowing us to finish the regatta on a high note. Every member of our team got a chance to compete, and they all delivered.”
The Eastern Semi-Finals saw a fierce battle for the lead. Dartmouth College initially held the top spot, but Boston College surged ahead at the end of the first day with 131 points. Stanford University was close behind in second, and Dartmouth College slipped to third. On the second day, Harvard sailors executed eight top-five finishes, propelling them to first place overall in the Eastern division. Dartmouth finished the day strong ending in second place overall. Yumi Yoshiyasu, a senior from Dartmouth College reflected on the two days of racing, “Open semi-finals brought a full range of wind conditions in true Charles River fashion. Consistency and patience were key the past two days and we’re excited to carry that onto the finals!”

The 2024 Open National Semi-Finals were a testament to the skill and determination of all the competing sailors. As the competition advances to the finals, the excitement and anticipation continue to build.
